How to Read Pearl Size Ranges in Millimeters

Pearl size is listed in millimeters (mm), while necklace and bracelet length is a separate measurement. A size range such as 7–7.5mm describes the listed pearls; it is not a necklace-length option or a quality grade.

How to read pearl sizes and jewelry lengths

On smaller screens, swipe the table horizontally to compare all columns.

Listing example What the number describes What it does not tell you
7–7.5mm pearl The stated pearl-size range. The total length of a necklace or chain.
12–13mm pendant pearl The size range of the pearl in the pendant. Whether a chain is included.
9–10mm rice-shaped pearl The listing's size range for a non-round form. Every dimension or the exact proportions of each pearl.
18 or 20 inches Separate necklace-length options when shown in a selector. Two necklaces included in one purchase.
17 and 18 inches, two rows The row lengths within one necklace when the listing says so. Selectable length variants.
4–5mm white and 13–14mm lavender Two named size groups in a mixed design. One continuous choice of pearl sizes.

What about rice, potato and baroque pearl sizes?

Read the shape and the size phrase together. If a non-round outline matters to you, ask which dimension the listed range refers to and whether an additional length, width or side view is available. Do not infer all dimensions from one range.

Look at a close-up and the full piece, then compare the setting or clasp as well as the pearl. The pearl shape guide explains how shape terms differ.

Compare actual listing measurements

A short size checklist before ordering

  1. Write down the pearl type, shape and millimeter range exactly as listed.
  2. Record the jewelry length separately and check whether it is fixed, selectable or a set of row lengths.
  3. Look for a scale view of the actual design. A close-up fills the screen but does not tell you how large the piece will feel when worn.
  4. If you are comparing non-round pearls, request the extra dimension or angle you need rather than assuming a spherical shape.
  5. Confirm set contents, chain inclusion and the selected variant before deciding.

Does a larger millimeter size mean a better pearl?

Size is only one value factor. GIA also considers shape, color, luster, surface, nacre and matching. Compare the attributes that matter to you alongside the design and current price.
