Short answer: “Hanadama” and “AAA” are not interchangeable pearl grades. Hanadama is a historical Japanese trade term now recognized by GIA as a specific quality-range comment for qualifying Akoya cultured pearls on eligible GIA Pearl Classification Reports. AAA, AA+ and similar letter grades are seller grading terms whose thresholds can vary by seller.
Hanadama vs AAA Akoya at a glance
| Question | Hanadama | AAA / AA+ / other seller grades |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | A designated Akoya quality range when supported by a qualifying laboratory report/comment | A seller or brand grading scale |
| Universal across sellers? | The laboratory criteria are defined by the issuing lab/report | No; thresholds can differ by seller |
| Pearl type | Akoya cultured pearls meeting the designation criteria | Can be used by sellers for Akoya and sometimes other pearl types |
| What should a buyer verify? | The report issuer, report details and the pearls matched to that report | The seller’s published grading methodology and item-specific specifications |
What does Hanadama mean?
GIA describes Hanadama—literally “flower pearl”—as a historical Japanese trade term for a high Akoya cultured-pearl quality range. GIA began adding a Hanadama quality-range comment to qualifying Pearl Classification Reports in 2023. Under GIA’s published criteria, qualifying Akoya cultured pearls must be round to near-round, have white bodycolor with or without overtone, show excellent luster, clean to lightly spotted surfaces, excellent to very good matching for pairs or strands, and sufficient nacre thickness and quality.
That makes Hanadama more than a marketing adjective when it is tied to a qualifying laboratory report. The report matters.
What does AAA Akoya mean?
AAA is a seller-defined grade. There is no single worldwide rule that makes every seller’s AAA Akoya identical. One seller might place more weight on surface cleanliness, another on luster or matching, and thresholds can differ by pearl type.
For AKWAYA products, read the grade together with the product’s listed luster, surface, size, shape, matching and other specifications. AKWAYA’s type-specific framework is published in the AKWAYA Pearl Grading Methodology.
Is Hanadama the same as AAAA?
No. Hanadama is not simply another step above AAA or AAAA on a universal ladder. A seller’s AAAA label and a laboratory Hanadama designation come from different systems. The correct comparison is the underlying quality factors and, for Hanadama, the actual report criteria.
Does Hanadama guarantee the “best” Akoya pearl?
It identifies a strict quality range, but “best” can also depend on the buyer’s preferred size, overtone, jewelry design and budget. A pearl outside the Hanadama designation is not automatically low quality; it might not have been submitted for a qualifying report, or it might fall outside one of the designation criteria.
What should I verify before paying a Hanadama premium?
- Report: confirm that a laboratory report explicitly includes the Hanadama designation or comment.
- Identity: confirm that the pearls being sold are the pearls represented by the report.
- Size and matching: compare the exact millimeter range and pair/strand matching.
- Color and overtone: evaluate personal preference as well as quality.
- Jewelry construction: review metal, clasp, earring findings or other setting details.
- Price: compare like-for-like Akoya jewelry rather than comparing the report label alone.
How AKWAYA uses Akoya grades
AKWAYA does not treat AA, AA+, AAA or AAAA as equivalent to a Hanadama laboratory designation. Unless a current product page explicitly states a Hanadama designation and provides the relevant report information, do not assume that an AKWAYA Akoya item is Hanadama.

Hanadama vs AAA Akoya FAQ
Is every Hanadama pearl Japanese?
Hanadama is a trade-quality designation associated with Akoya cultured pearls; the designation itself should be verified through the specific laboratory report rather than inferred from a product name or country reference.
Can a seller call a pearl Hanadama without a report?
For a buyer, the useful evidence is a qualifying report from the stated laboratory. A marketing claim by itself does not tell you which laboratory criteria were applied.
Can AAA Akoya look excellent?
Yes. AAA can represent high quality within a seller’s system, but the meaning depends on that seller’s published thresholds. Compare the actual luster, surface, shape, nacre and matching information.
